Greg Laurie: Commit Suicide and Go To Heaven

My Own Experience Ministering to those who are Suicidal

Several years ago I got a call from a long-time friend that I never heard from in a while. He was faced with an enormous amount of problems in life. He was on the brink of losing his wife – not to death but to other guys.

While I was speaking with him I felt as though he was suicidal. I asked him. He confirmed that yes, he was suicidal.

I knew he owned a gun. And I knew him well enough to know that this was a pivotal time in his life, and if someone didn’t step in and provide comfort, and truth, then he would probably end his life.

For nearly two decades prior to this call I have studied the topic of life after death. I have heard countless testimonies of those who were brought back from the dead and what they had to say about it. I knew enough about death, and God’s Word to provide exactly what my dear friend needed.

I knew that if I didn’t act quickly, and accurately I would probably lose my friend.

I asked him if I could come over to his place to talk. He agreed.

I went over. I sat at the dining room table with him, and spoke to him heart-to-heart. I told him how much damage he would do, not only to himself, but to all of us who love him, if he were to commit suicide.

But most importantly I told him what God thinks of suicide – that suicide is murder, and that no murderer will enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

To confirm God’s Word I shared several stories of people who have committed suicide, were later brought back from the dead and lived to tell about it. EVERY ONE went to hell. And many of them publicly beg others NOT to commit suicide because they know by experience that nothing but Hell awaits you, regardless of your “faith”.

After sharing all that with my friend I left his home knowing that I told him the truth in love, with tears running down my face.

To make a long story short, my friend is still alive. Not only is he still alive, he is back with his wife and life is going well!

If he were to commit suicide there is no doubt in my mind that he would have jumped on that train of no return – a train that takes you straight to everlasting torment.

Compassion

I would never straight out tell Rick Warren that his son is most certainly in hell. That would be insensitive and mean. However, I would not lie about it and say he is in heaven. Quite frankly, I would avoid talking about it. But if Rick Warren asked me, I would have to tell him the truth.

Lying about it only makes matters worse. A lie is a lie. Although your purpose of telling a lie is to make someone feel better, a lie cannot produce good fruit in the long run.

Don’t get me wrong. I am very sorry to hear of every victim of suicide. But saying that those who murder themselves are in heaven only makes things MUCH worse. It gives others who are on the brink of suicide all the more reason to do so. And it feeds the Satanic lie that you will actually be in a better place.

Greg Laurie’s Error

A few years ago, Matthew Warren, Rick Warren’s son tragically committed suicide. Greg Laurie stepped up the plate publicly and said, “He’s now in the arms of Jesus”.

Having read this, my blood started to boil. I knew that that wasn’t the truth. It wasn’t even close to the truth. But why would he say that? Because perhaps he believes it. Or at least he has talked himself into believing it. Perhaps he says that to comfort Mat Warren’s loved ones who would be in consumed in terrible mourning at the time.

Although saying such a nice thing may seem to be the “right” thing to do, it most certainly is not.

How many people would hear that and think… hmmm, if I want to end all the misery and be comforted “in the arms of Jesus” as Laurie said, then all I have to do is “believe” in Jesus and put a gun to my head. Only God knows how many people murder themselves because of these ear-tickling preachers who find more joy in making men happy by telling a lie, as opposed to offending men and telling the truth. Such men are repulsive to the utmost degree.

As far as I know, almost everyone who commits suicide do NOT believe they will end up in hell. They either do not believe at all. Or they believe they will go to heaven.

But why would they believe they would go to heaven? Perhaps they know of someone else who committed suicide, and the preacher said that they are now in a better place.

Truth: Greg Laurie, and all his ear-tickling cronies will be drenched in the blood of suicide victims come judgment day.

My Email to Greg Laurie

Yes, I don’t just rant on here. I personally sent him an email.

Here are the contents of that email:

This is a personal message for Pastor Greg Laurie. Please ensure this message gets before the eyes of Pastor Greg Laurie. Dear Pastor, I have seen you on TBN over the years. You have always inspired me by your efforts and works for the Lord. But I saw something on ChristianPost.com about you that has shook me to the core. It was a quote from your tweet on twitter regarding Rev. Rick Warren’s son. Before I touch on this I want to make something very clear. I too have lost a child. In fact my daughter was just 3.5 years old when she passed away. I know very well what it is like to lose a child. I know first hand. So what I have to say is not said from a shallow heart. I tell you the truth. But for over 20 years now I have deeply researched, and studied the lives and testimonies of those who have died and have had the privilege of being resuscitated/resurrected to tell us what is beyond death. I am very well equipped to answer any question that anyone has got regarding the “afterlife”. Having said that, I have yet to find one testimony of someone who has committed suicide and has NOT gone to hell. Every testimony that I have ever heard of a person who has committed suicide, clinically died, and come back to life – ALL say they were in hell. I realize that this is a heavy thing to say. But I also realize that this is the truth. You said that Rick Warren’s son is in the loving arms of Jesus. Do you realize that in saying that you not only deliver the wrong information, but you, in fact, are upholding the biggest lie that Satan could ever tell a suicidal person? That lie is “kill yourself. The pain will stop. You will go to a better place. You will be in peace”. Greg Laurie, saying that Warren’s son is in the arms of Jesus is WRONG in more ways than one. Several months ago I received a call – a desperate call – from a long time friend of mine who was just about to end his life. I know him very well. And I know that he was NOT joking. I know that many people say that because that is their cry for attention, or a tool of manipulation. But believe me, Pastor Greg. This was for real! After spending many hours with him face to face there was only one thing that held him back. There was only one thing that kept him from pulling the trigger – I showed him and told him by laying testimony upon testimony, and scripture upon scripture, that taking your life guarantees you hell! That was several months ago. He is still alive today. If I would have given him any inclination that he would be in the “arms of Jesus” I KNOW he would be dead right now! I tell you the truth. I know that Warren’s son was dubbed “mentally challenged”, and had many psychological diagnosis. But Greg, so does most of the people who commit horrible sins. Most people who have mental problems use that as an excuse. That young boy had one thing that fed his suicidal tendencies: false teaching. He was probably taught (not directly, but indirectly or by implication) that he would go to heaven if he committed suicide. As much as I respect Rick Warren, I also suspect Rick Warren of watering down the true message, and committing adultery with political correctness; thus not teaching and preaching the unadulterated word. And now he is paying the price for it. In the meantime. Please, I beg you… Please… correct this wrong statement! Do your research! Stop teaching people by implication that you can destroy your body and still go to “the loving arms of Jesus”. It is simply not true. Suicide is a always a one way ticket to hell…. son of a famous pastor, or not. Please correct! In doing so you can save a lot of lives… and get their blood off your hands.

His response:

Dear Christopher,

Thank you for writing Harvest Online. My name is Patrick and I am part of the correspondence team. I will be responding on behalf of Pastor Greg and his staff.

I know that you are emphatic in your position on suicide, but let’s look at what the Bible says.

Jesus said, “All manner of sin shall be forgiven, but the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven “(Matthew 12:31). Blasphemy means rejecting the work that Christ did on the cross. Suicide is self murder not blasphemy of the Spirit. Therefore, it too can be forgiven, but God is the judge of whose names are written in the Book of Life.

The Bible mentions six specific people who committed suicide: Abimelech (Judges 9:54), Saul (1 Samuel 31:4), Saul’s armor-bearer (1 Samuel 31:4-6), Ahithophel (2 Samuel 17:23), Zimri (1 Kings 16:18), and Judas (Matthew 27:5). Five of them were wicked, sinful men (not enough is said regarding Saul’s armor-bearer to make a judgment as to his character). Some consider Samson an instance of suicide (Judges 16:26-31), but Samson’s goal was to kill the Philistines, not himself. The Bible views suicide as equal to murder, which is what it is’self-murder. God is the only one who is to decide when and how a person should die.

According to the Bible, suicide is not what determines whether a person gains entrance into heaven. If an unsaved person commits suicide, he has done nothing but “expedite” his journey to hell. However, that person who committed suicide will ultimately be in hell for rejecting salvation through Christ, not because he committed suicide. What does the Bible say about a Christian who commits suicide? The Bible teaches that from the moment we truly believe in Christ, we are guaranteed eternal life (John 3:16). According to the Bible, Christians can know beyond any doubt that they possess eternal life (1 John 5:13). Nothing can separate a Christian from God’s love (Romans 8:38-39). If no “created thing” can separate a Christian from God’s love, and even a Christian who commits suicide is a “created thing,” then not even suicide can separate a Christian from God’s love. Jesus died for all of our sins, and if a true Christian, in a time of spiritual attack and weakness, commits suicide, that would still be a sin covered by the blood of Christ.

Suicide is still a serious sin against God. According to the Bible, suicide is murder; it is always wrong. Serious doubts should be raised about the genuineness of faith of anyone who claimed to be a Christian yet committed suicide. There is no circumstance that can justify someone, especially a Christian, taking his/her own life. Christians are called to live their lives for God, and the decision on when to die is God’s and God’s alone. Although it is not describing suicide, 1 Corinthians 3:15 is probably a good description of what happens to a Christian who commits suicide: “He himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.”

God Bless,

Patrick

My reply:

Hi Patrick,

Thank you for taking the time to respond. It seems as you, like myself, view this issue as a serious issue.. and indeed it should be viewed as a serious issue. Suicide is very serious. And our doctrine regarding suicide should be based on solid evidence (first-hand witnesses), which resonates with scripture.
I have read your reply. I have read all your points. There are a few very important things are are overlooked.
I am going to address to main areas of error:
One: Witnesses -first hand accounts, and
Two: Biblical error. The scripture you quoted is not rightly divided.
  1. Witnesses. The Bible clearly says “in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.”
There are countless witnesses that testify that suicide leads only one way – hell.
I have spent 21 years studying these cases.
How many years have you spend studying cases of those who killed themselves, was brought back to life to tell of their after-life experiences?
How many testimonies have you heard from those who clinically died by suicide, to later have the privilege of being resuscitated and live to tell of what they experienced beyond death?
I have yet to come across one person that committed suicide, been resuscitated/resurrected, and tell of a heavenly experience. NOT ONE!
You are blinding your eyes to these credible accounts, and indirectly calling them all liars!
I mean, if 50% of these people say they went to heaven, then I’ll be the first one to say “maybe you’re right!”
Think about it – you’re in a court of law – you make your case without witnesses. The other side makes their case with 10 witnesses all saying you are wrong – who do you think the judge will believe?
Honestly, Patrick, if you know of one person who has committed suicide, was clinically dead for a considerable amount of time (10+ minutes), and has been resuscitated/resurrected to tell about – and did not experience hell – I would sincerely like to know about it. Because it would be the first I have seen in 21 years of study. Please give me names, video links, or contact information. I would greatly appreciate it.
  2. Misinterpreting, and misapplying the scriptures. consider the following:

Your quote of Jesus, saying that blasphemy is the only unforgivable sin, is certainly not true in an absolute and universal sense.

This is not to be universally applied to all situations and all circumstances.
Case #1 in point:
Jesus condemned Judas to the utmost – saying that it would have better that he would not even have been born! Can you imagine Jesus telling you that? Can you imagine Jesus telling anybody that?
That is one of the most deriding and denouncing things that anyone can ever say?
If the King of the Universe tells you it would have been better if you would not have been born – you are in trouble! DEEP TROUBLE. Was Judas forgiven? Absolutely NOT! There is no evidence of Judas receiving any forgiveness. Therefore, his betrayal sealed his fate! And his fate was not in the eternal blessings of the joys of heaven!
Any other viewpoint is certainly a wild stretch of imagination mixed with a generous portion of assumption.
Case #2 in point:
Jesus also made it clear that the sin of unforgiveness is unforgivable. He made it very clear that the Father will not forgive unless you forgive. So then, we can safely conclude that not only blasphemy is unforgivable, but if you refuse to forgive, you will not be forgiven. period.
The Old Testament law “Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people” is the basis of Jesus’ teaching on forgiveness. Jesus made this very clear. If you do not forgive (hold a grudge, thus disobey God in the aforementioned law) then God will not forgive you.
In addition:
The Bible also says that God will destroy those who destroy the temple(body)! This is mentioned in the context of sexual sin. The Apostle Paul said that if you destroy the body by sexual immorality, God will destroy you. How much more if someone blows their brains out?

If God says He will destroy you, does that sound like you will be a recipient of God’s love?
If you continue holding to this Satanic deception that you can believe in Jesus, blow your brains out, and all will be well with you and your home is made in heaven – then you are seriously deceived.
Last year I saved my best friends life, who was on the brink of blowing his brains out. How did I save his life?
I went over the testimonies of those who committed suicide and came back to tell of the horrors of hell on the other side. Many of these people are “Christians” – by the way.
I quoted scripture like the ones I quoted above – and many more.
The ONLY REASON he didn’t pull the trigger. In his own words, “I will lose both God and my girlfriend”
He was very depressed because his girlfriend left him. I managed to convince him that if he pulled the trigger he would “lose God” i.e. go to hell.
If he heard this despicable deception that Greg Laurie is teaching, or anything like you said in your previous email, I KNOW he would be dead now – burning in hell. Because some pathetic preacher said that he would be “in the arms of Jesus”. Strong words? You better believe it! We are not only talking about people’s lives. We are talking about people’s eternal destiny.
If you continue teaching these things – God only knows how many people around the world will blow their brains out thinking that they will go to the same place Greg Laurie said Matthew Warren went – “the arms of Jesus”… only to find that the truth is that THE WITNESSES where right…. that their souls will be caught forever in the trap of the Devil… in the torments of hell… of because of pathetic politically correct preachers… and their blood will be on YOUR HANDS.

To that I go no reply. But with the most recent development regarding Whitney Houston’s daughter, I sent another message to Greg Laurie’s Patrick. The entire text is as follows:

Dear Patrick,

Now we have Whitney Houston’s daughter who was found unresponsive in a bathtub in a similar fashion as her mother. Luckily, she is still alive.

At this time we do not know what happened. But but you and I must agree, it eerily resembles her mother’s death. And I will go so far as to say that it is very possible that there are more similarities than what we are being told.

But let’s suppose she wanted to go just like her mother went. Why would she do that?

Patrick, you and I know that judgment begins in the house of God. When Whitney Houston destroyed herself, the preachers preached her into heaven. And, of course, Whitney’s daughter was soaking it all in.

We know that Whitney’s daughter went through a horrible time immediately following her mother’s death. We know that she went through counseling. I don’t know the details of her counseling, but I would suspect that she was told that her mother is in a better place – just as the preachers said.

So then, if Whitney’s daughter was still a little depressed about life without her mother and/or other adverse circumstances, why wouldn’t she want to go to heaven to be with her mother?

Judgment begins in the house of God. IF she actually followed in her mother’s footsteps, walking down the path of destruction, I blame it completely on the church – especially the preachers who “tickled the ears” of friends and family and said she is now in heaven.

And this is what happens to MULTITUDES of people. They put a gun to their head, thinking that they will be in a better place. After all, they attended a funeral of their friend who committed suicide, and the preacher said they are now with Jesus!

This makes my blood boil as I know the destruction and murder that you enable by emphatically saying that any “believer” who commits suicide (or murder) will go to heaven because their sin is covered. This defies God’s word AND countless first-hand witnesses. And yes, Patrick, this is a VERY serious matter that should not be swept under the rug.
My best friend was on the brink of suicide. He was VERY close. I paid him a visit, and told him not only about what the Bible says about those who murder [themselves], but countless FIRST HAND witnesses who have been brought back from the dead – ALL of which say they were in hell – regardless of their belief in Jesus.
The scriptures CLEARLY say that we have to REPENT from our sins before forgiveness is granted (proverbs 28:13). I cannot quote every scripture that confirms this. This principle is found THROUGHOUT the Bible.
The first message Jesus preached was “REPENT”.The first message that the disciples preached was “REPENT”.
The first message of the book of Acts was “REPENT”.
In fact, the message of REPENTANCE is THROUGHOUT the book of the book of Acts. It ends as Paul said that God commands all men everywhere to repent!
The last word Jesus had to the church in Revelation, chapter 2 and 3 was “Repent!”
If you are educated in God’s word, you know full well that blasphemy of the Spirit is NOT the only unforgivable sin. Jesus also said that those who do not forgive others will NOT be forgiven. From Genesis to Revelation we see clearly that those who refuse to repent WILL not be forgiven either. And of course, most of those who commit suicide are not repentant, and indeed cannot repent.
So then, according to the full counsel of God, there are three unforgivable sins: 1) Blasphemy of the Spirit. 2) un-forgiveness, and 3) not being willing or able to repent (consider what the scriptures say about Esau, who wanted to repent, but couldn’t).
And we know that un-forgiven souls are not allowed in heaven. Being un-forgiven naturally qualifies you for Hell.
You admitted clearly that suicide IS murder. But you neglected to quote the various New Testament scriptures that confirm that those who commit murder WILL go to Hell!
Do you not realize that Paul was writing to the CHURCH, warning them that anyone who murders will NOT inherit the Kingdom of God?
So then, if the blood of Christ somehow gives you freedom to sin and still go to heaven, then please explain the FIRM and SERIOUS warning in Hebrews 10, that CLEARLY says that those who sin willfully are in fact TRAMPLING the Blood underfoot.
Therefore, how can you trample the blood underfoot, and still be saved?
YOU have fallen prey to the “ear tickling” gospel preaching namby-pambies who make other suicidal Christians believe that if they commit these horrible sins that somehow God will break His own word, just to honor their so called “faith”.
God tells us plainly that sin will lead your soul to hell. He told that to the BELIEVERS – NOT the unbelievers.
God clearly said that in order to be saved, we must change our mind (repent) concerning sin, turn to Jesus, and thus receive His blood worthily – NOT trampling it underfoot.[Heb 10:26-29 NKJV] 26 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on [the testimony of] two or three witnesses. 29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? You haven’t heard Greg Laurie preach this, have you?
Are you attempting to take one scripture to nullify another? Remember, His Word in it’s fullness is forever settled in heaven. Not one word will be null or void. The way to salvation is clear according to Jesus, and his disciples: 1) Repent 2) Believe
Then you can say with Paul, those who belong to Christ HAVE crucified the flesh with it’s passions and desires (Galatians 5:24)
and again, “I AM crucified with Christ…”  (Galatians 2:20)
and again, “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?”  (Romans 6:1-2)
Spineless sin-friendly preachers who publicly imply that suicide will be forgiven WILL have their hands dripping with the blood of countless souls who murdered themselves, thinking that where they will go will be a “better place” – because of Satanic, deceptive, “ear tickling” teachings of these so called “preachers”!

    Hello there,
well said, indeed if one was thought the TRUTH he would have never taken his own life. Some people are too stubborn to admit in front of their audience that what they were preaching is not what the Bible says and it “backfired” on them. Our Father is Merciful and just therefore Masses for lost soul in purgatory is the only way to his salvation.
    God Bless

  2. ewa says:

One more thing, I need to share with you, all “abnormalities either pertaining to body or the mind of the humans” are given as a CROSS to carry. Nobody but God creator has right to end ones earthly life. Blaming on disability or anything else is in the eyes of God sin against his gift of life he gave us. He is the ONLY way to salvation. I don’t understand why people keep thinking is fair for humans to crucify Jesus for our sins but it’s not fair for humans to bear our crosses ? Wake up brothers and sisters pray to Lord Jesus Christ to help you carry your cross it feels to heavy. He will help you if you trust in him. Anyone who thinks that be ending his life the pain will be gone, I have a terrible news for you, is just a beginning of the ETERNAL torment. We should thank God for giving us cross to carry so that we can enter the gates of heaven and see his GLORY.
    This is the Truth
