If you are going to be like Enoch, Noah, Moses, David, Jesus, Peter, James, and John, and preach righteousness, it is inevitable that at some point in life someone will throw 1 John 1:8 in your face: If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
Let’s look into this chapter verse by verse starting at verse 5:
This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. [1 John 1:5 NKJV]
Here we see that God is pure light. There is no darkness in Him. That means there is no sin in Him.
If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. [1 John 1:6 NKJV]
This says that anyone who fellowships with God CANNOT walk in darkness. This means that just as there is no darkness in Him, there is NO DARKNESS in a person who fellowships with Him. It is IMPOSSIBLE to be bound in sin, and walk in the light at the same time. Sin is darkness. This verse confirms that anyone who fellowships with God CANNOT sin.
But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. [1 John 1:7 NKJV]
If we fellowship with God, then we also fellowship with others who fellowship with God. This is a no-brainer. But John doesn’t stop there. He emphatically states that IF we fellowship with Him, and His people, the blood of Jesus Christ CLEANSES us from ALL sin.
There is a BIG difference between cleansing a mess, and covering
a mess. The blood of Jesus DOES NOT throw a rug over the filthy stinking pile of sin, it CLEANSES it – it WASHES it away!
For those of you who are caught up with semantics, yes, Jesus covers our sin. But not like a rug covers a pile of dung. He “covers” our sin by washing it away. He “covers” the problem for you by giving you the power to REPENT of it.
See http://christopherenoch.org/?p=184 for more information about cleansing vs. covering.
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. [1 John 1:8 NKJV]
This verse is certainly one of the top misquoted verses by unregenerate Christians. Taken in context, it is referring to previous sin, not present sin.
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. [1 John 1:9 NKJV]
Once again John reassured us that we must confess our sins. In order to effectively confess your sin, you must let it go from your heart, and acknowledge that it is wrong, and has no place in you.
Therefore, if we confess our sins, He is faithful, and just to forgive us our sins, and CLEANSE US from ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS.
It can’t get any clearer than that. It’s simple. If your sin is cleansed, washed away… if you are purified from ALL unrighteousness that means your sin is GONE.
It is impossible to be cleansed, washed, and purified from ALL sin and still have it in your life.
