6 Sins That’ll Destroy a Nation

If you are a Christian, living in a democratic country, you have the privilege and the responsibility to vote. Yes, I know a lot of Christians do not vote. But when you do not vote, you are essentially giving power to strangers to determine the direction of the country, which governs every aspect of your life. This does not only affect you. It will affect your church, your friends, your family, and your descendants from now until the death of the nation.

The right to vote is a God given right, which you must exercise properly. It is the most powerful of all rights. Yet the most uneducated person can vote. It seems careless for a nation to let criminals, gross sinners, the uneducated, and simply ignorant people take control of the population. But it happens. This is all the reason more why Christians need to get off their comfy couches and vote.

God’s Laws of The Land

When the children of Israel were freed from the bondage of Egypt, they had a mission – to get to the promised land.  But why did God wait over 400 years to free His people?

The scriptures say that God waited for the sins of the Amorites to reach it’s full measure before kicking them out, so that the children of Israel could come in. This is what God said to Abram:

13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land [that is] not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years; 14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance. 15 And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age. 16 But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites [is] not yet full. (Gen 15:13-16 KJV)

Why did God have to wait for the sins of the Amorites to reach it’s full measure?

The answer is simple: Because He is a just God. He will not annihilate a nation for nothing. God has laws by which He operates. He will not destroy a nation just because He wants His people to come and take over. He has to wait for the sins of the former nation to fill up. Then he hammer comes down, and He judges that nation. Then He moves a better people in to take over the land – a people who doesn’t practice the same sins as the former nation, of course. It wouldn’t make sense to kick out one group of people for a certain sin, and allow another group of people in, who practice the same sin.

So What is God’s Law for the Land?

In other words, what sins make God angry enough to destroy the nation and give the land to another people? The answer is plainly spelled out for us in scripture.

Leviticus 18:1 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘I am the LORD your God. 3 According to the doings of the land of Egypt, where you dwelt, you shall not do; and according to the doings of the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you, you shall not do; nor shall you walk in their ordinances. 4 You shall observe My judgments and keep My ordinances, to walk in them: I am the Lord your God. 5 You shall therefore keep My statutes and My judgments, which if a man does, he shall live by them: I am the LORD.

Then God goes into a list of specific sins that He deems evil enough to bring down a nation. He begins with verses 6-18 in which He condemns all forms of incest.

In verse 19, God speaks of sexual uncleanness, laying with a woman during her time of menstrual period.

19 ‘Also you shall not approach a woman to uncover her nakedness as long as she is in her customary impurity.

Verse 20 speaks explicitly about adultery:

20 Moreover you shall not lie carnally with your neighbor’s wife, to defile yourself with her.

In verse 21 we read about Molech. Molech was a statue with a hole cut in it’s belly. In the belly, or womb, of the statue, a fire would be burning.

The people who engage in all kinds of sexual activity. Naturally, unwanted children were conceived. The children, when born, or extracted from the womb would be thrown into the womb of Molech to die.

The ancient form of abortion. A prophetic picture of abortion.

21 And you shall not let any of your descendants pass through the fire to Molech, nor shall you profane the name of your God: I am the LORD.

Verse 22, God clearly speaks of homosexuality:

22 You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination.

Finally, we have bestiality:

23 Nor shall you mate with any animal, to defile yourself with it. Nor shall any woman stand before an animal to mate with it. It is perversion.

It is very important to understand this. These are standards by which God uses to judge whether or not a nation shall survive.

Let’s look at these laws in an itemized list:

  1. Incest
  2. Sexual Uncleanness
  3. Adultery
  4. Abortion, thus
  5. Profaning the Name of God
  6. Homosexuality
  7. Bestiality

God goes on in Lev. 18:24:

24 ‘Do not defile yourselves with any of these things; for by all these the nations are defiled, which I am casting out before you.

25 For the land is defiled; therefore I visit the punishment of its iniquity upon it, and the land vomits out its inhabitants.

26 You shall therefore keep My statutes and My judgments, and shall not commit any of these abominations, either any of your own nation or any stranger who dwells among you

27 (for all these abominations the men of the land have done, who were before you, and thus the land is defiled), 28 lest the land vomit you out also when you defile it, as it vomited out the nations that were before you. 29 For whoever commits any of these abominations, the persons who commit them shall be cut off from among their people.

30 ‘Therefore you shall keep My ordinance, so that you do not commit any of these abominable customs which were committed before you, and that you do not defile yourselves by them: I am the Lord your God.’”

God gives us a clear WARNING: These laws, and these sins are so serious that God will drive out His own people if they commit them.

So to answer our question from earlier – These are the sins of the Amorites: incest, sexual uncleanness, adultery, abortion, homosexuality, and bestiality.

Let’s go on to read Deuteronomy chapter 9, in which God expounds on this amazing principle in which He operates.

Deuteronomy 9:1 “Hear, O Israel: You are to cross over the Jordan today, and go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and fortified up to heaven, 2 a people great and tall, the descendants of the Anakim, whom you know, and of whom you heard it said, ‘Who can stand before the descendants of Anak?’ 3 Therefore understand today that the LORD your God is He who goes over before you as a consuming fire. He will destroy them and bring them down before you; so you shall drive them out and destroy them quickly, as the LORD has said to you.

4 “Do not think in your heart, after the LORD your God has cast them out before you, saying, ‘Because of my righteousness the LORD has brought me in to possess this land’; but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the LORD is driving them out from before you. 5 It is not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart that you go in to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations that the LORD your God drives them out from before you, and that He may fulfill the word which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 6 Therefore understand that the LORD your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stiff-necked people.

In other words, don’t think that it’s because you’re so good that you are inheriting the land. The truth is that you are not so good. You are a stiff-necked people.

But it is because of the sins of the nations who currently dwell there – the sins that you do not commit, that I drive them out, and bring you in.

Let’s Recap

The children of Israel were in bondage for over 400 years. Evidently, those 400 years started out well. The Pharaoh in power at the time of Joseph favored the Jewish people because of their relation to Joseph. He gave them the best of the land. He treated them well.

It wasn’t until after Pharaoh died, and another took his place that the children of Israel began to be mistreated. They were mistreated because first and foremost, that Pharaoh didn’t respect, or favor Joseph, or his people. And also because the children of Israel were getting quite powerful, and large in number.

Although the children of Israel were suffering, God waited until the sins of the Amorites were full before bringing them up out of Egypt. God did this because this is how He works. He has a list of 6 things, which if any nation does them, He will destroy the nation. In fact, it says in the scriptures that even if God’s chosen people themselves started doing these things, He will drive them out & destroy them.

God said that He will judge them because of these sins. But it also says time and time again that even the land itself would “vomit” them out – as if the land itself is a personality that abhors these practices.

So then, the transgressors have two entities against them: God Himself, and the land itself.

In democratic countries, people have the privilege to vote.

More than that, it is your responsibility to vote, especially if your are a Christian. But how should you vote?

Vote for the candidate whose values more closely matches that of God’s laws. I know that in our day, and age, you may not be able to find anyone who would perfectly match God’s ways as per Leviticus 18. But at least we have the responsibility to vote for the lesser of the two evils – the person whose values are closer to that of God’s.

For I AM the LORD, I change not! (Malachi 3:6a KJV)
