The Power of Perception

In Dec 1979 a man by the name of Steve Jobs was called to meet with executives at Xerox to see their latest projects.

Steve was shown 3 things. But he was so blinded by the first, that he didn’t even see the other two. He was shown Object Oriented Programming, but he didn’t even see that.

He was shown a network of computers almost like a “mini” Internet. These computers were able to send and receive email… etc… But Steve Jobs did not see that.

The first thing they showed him was a GUI (Graphical User Interface) – a mouse, that controlled a pointer on a screen… clickable menus, icons, etc… etc…

Within 10 minutes Jobs knew that GUI’s would be on every computer. He immediately started training his employees at Apple. He pushed the idea of the GUI aggressively. Ultimately, it took off when the Apple Macintosh was designed, manufactured, marketed, and sold. The rest is history.

But Xerox couldn’t see past their copy machines. Although Xerox invented and produced the worlds first GUI, they did not know what they had sitting right in front of them. They did not perceive the power of the computer. Steve Jobs did.

Had Xerox seen the opportunity, they would have been the greatest computer company in the world… greater than IBM… and yes, they could have been even greater than Microsoft!

But they did not see it. They did not understand. They were told by Apple. They were told that they had IT! The had the greatest invention in the world of computers. But they did not, or would not understand.

The scriptures say,

“Hearing you will hear, and shall not understand; And seeing you will see, and not perceive;

For the hearts of this people have grown dull. [Their] ears are hard of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest they should see with [their] eyes and hear with [their] ears, Lest they should understand with [their] hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.”  – Acts 28:26-27 NJKV

A lot people are told. A lot of people have the answer right in front of their face. But they do not see it. They do not understand. If they did, they would change their ways, and God would heal them.
